Written in 1891 and banned during rehearsals, Salome is Wilde’s wild take on the infamous Biblical temptress and her unrequited love of the prophet Iokanaan. A dizzyingly sensual poetic adaptation, Salome was finally produced in Paris in 1896. Although Wilde did not live to see it performed, the play remains a great work, inspiring myriad of interpretations from directors, actors, and even composer Richard Strauss who used its text as libretto for his opera. Mark Jackson—the writer/director of the hit production The Death of Meyerhold—will direct, and Bay Area favorite Ron Campbell will play Salome’s lascivious stepfather, Herod.
