Awake and Sing!

by Clifford Odets
directed by Joy Carlin
August 21, 2009 - September 27, 2009

Added Matinee September 26th
show length: 2 hours, 15 minutes with one intermission

First produced in 1935 by the influential Group Theatre and written at the height of the Depression, Odets’ passionate, tumultuous, and ultimately hopeful Awake and Sing! tells the story of the exuberant Berger family as they struggle with the rampant poverty and hardships of the time. Brimming with life, this timely play paints a true-to-life portrait of dreams and disappointments, fears and follies in the face of the American dream, creating a rich and lasting tribute to America’s working class.

"The piece is beautifully created from top to bottom..." - Bay Area News Group (read the full review)

"Packed with good parts for actors, tense family dynamics and infectious gallows humor" - San Francisco Chronicle (read the full review)
