Upcoming Shows

The Children

A long-married couple live in a ramshackle cottage near the edge of a nuclear disaster that recalls the 2011 Fukushima catastrophe. Intruding into their somewhat eccentric existence comes Rose, a former co-worker at the power station whose appearance after 30 years is a mystery that will inspire both laughter and an increasing sense of menace. But Rose is on an important mission.
A recent hit on Broadway after successful run at London’s Royal Court, Lucy Kirkwood ’s unique play is a beautifully written puzzle about personal responsibility, guilt, and what today’s elders owe the young.

“…a richly suggestive and beautifully written piece of work…Kirkwood is the most rewarding dramatist of her generation.”
—The Independent (London)

Aurora Theatre Company opens the West Coast premiere of "The Children" in a production that ripples with the humor, the secrets, the mystery, the tension, and the moral dilemmas that Lucy Kirkwood has so skillfully embedded in her play, with Aurora doing so with a Bay Area veteran cast of three that...
Since I became Artistic Director of Aurora, we've been talking a lot about what makes Aurora unique. The word that keeps coming up is intimate. Our intimate stage, 150 seats in a three-quarter-thrust configuration, is fundamental to the work that we do. This manifests in at least two important ways. First, having the audience so close to the actors means our work can achieve a high level of nuance and specificity. The actors don't have to work just to fill the space; every subtle shift and tremor is on full display. Because of this, and because we bring in the best actors the Bay Area has to offer, plays that emphasize language are particularly effective at Aurora. Our actors can eke out every ounce of meaning from even the most layered and complex text. Second, the thrust configuration means that your awareness of the audience never goes away entirely. Theatre is an act of shared imagination. There's something powerful about participating in that shared suspension of disbelief, and about gathering as a community to jump headlong into a story that speaks to the present moment. Our current play, THE CHILDREN, takes full advantage of all of this. The writing is exquisite, and we have three remarkable actors working at the top of their game to bring it to life with extraordinary depth and detail. And the play inspires us to think deeply about our responsibilities to society -- it makes for riveting theatre, challenging in all the best ways. THE CHILDREN is scheduled to close March 1. I hope to see you at the theatre. - Josh Costello Artistic Director
